Η wastegate είναι η βαλβίδα που ρυθμίζει τις στροφές της τουρμπίνας και την πίεση που βλέπουμε στην πολλαπλή εισαγωγής. Ο ρόλος της είναι να δίνει μια εναλλακτική, ευκολότερη δίοδο στα καυσαέρια να φύγουν στην εξάτμιση όταν η πίεση στην εισαγωγή εχει ανέβει πολύ, χωρίς να περάσουν μέσα από τον στρόβιλο του τούρμπο. Έτσι πέφτουν οι στροφές και μειώνεται η πίεση.
Στα τούρμπο μικρού και μεσαίου μεγέθους, υπάρχει μια τέτοια θυρίδα εσωτερικά, στο μαντέμι, που ελέγχεται από ένα εξωτερικό επενεργητή (wastegate actuator).
Στα μεγάλα τούρμπο, λόγω μεγέθους του στροβίλου, υπάρχει μεγάλη έλλειψη χώρου στο μαντέμι. Είναι αδύνατη η τοποθέτηση μιας εσωτερικής θυρίδας. Έτσι, τοποθετείται εξωτερική wastegate επάνω στην πολλαπλή εξαγωγής που συνδέεται με ξεχωριστό σωλήνα με την εξάτμιση.
